Lakeside Weekend
The annual Lakeside weekend for M/W16s was held this weekend in the Lake District. Over 100 juniors and coaches from nearly all the UK regions were there for a weekend of fun and training on quality Lakeland areas. Saturday was spent on High Dam, just above the Lakeside YMCA National Centre where we were staying.
Alongside the training on Saturday a sprint race was held around the Lakeside grounds. It was very fast but didnt lack technical details. The morning group used emit punching but, due to a system failure, the afternoon group had to make do with pin punching. There were some very impressive runs from the juniors: Alice Butt won the girls, still a W14 and beating girls up to 2 years older than her. She was also 3rd out of all the women coaches, being only 20 seconds behind a Swiss junior team JWOC runner. Rhodri Buffet led the junior boys by over 30 secs, a considerable margin over such a short distance in a strong field. He was also 3rd out of the male coaches.
The results are as follows:
1 Rhodri Buffet (Wales) 11.31
2 Hector Haines (Yorkshire) 12.07
3 Matt Lyle (SW) 12.14
1 Alice Butt (SW) 15.40
2 Hollie Orr (Scotland) 16.01
3 Vicky Stevens (Yorkshire) 16.12
Coaches:
1 Matt Crane (control hanger, formerly WM) 10.16
2 Neil Northrop (coach with NE) 10.59
3 Richard Robinson (coach with EM) 11.52
1 Helen Palmer (control hanger, formerly EM and Wales) 14.25
2 Rahel Friederich (Swiss Junior Team, coach with Yorkshire) 15.20
3 Alice Bedwell (coach with Wales) 16.20
The rest of the day was spent on High Dam, with each squad doing a variety of exercises planned by their regional coach, including simplification, line and route choice courses. In the evening Helen Palmer gave a talk about her 6 months living, training and racing in Sweden this summer, and then the juniors had a couple of hours free to mix and socialise before bedtime.
Sunday’s training was on Simpson Ground. We did a selection of exercises that had been pre-planned; a control pick, route choice exercise, line course and attack points exercise. Then it was back to the centre for showers before setting off back home.
All in all it was a brilliant weekend, very well organised, very useful training and most of all a very enjoyable weekend!
