fcc :: race 1 2006
The first race of this year’s Future Champions Cup series took place at the BKO National Event at Cold Ash on a cold day in the south of England.
The performance of the day had to be Anne Edward’s 6 minute win on the W18 course, winning all but 2 legs, and one of those being the run-in. Another bottom-year 18 who ran well was AIRE’s Victoria Stevens for 2nd place on the same course, with Stefanie Blomquist (BAOC/SARUM) in 3rd. There was a much lower turnout on the W20 course, with only 8 athletes competing. However, there was no lack in the standard of runners with 2 of last year’s JWOC team competing, and another 3 of the current GB Junior Squad. Oxford Uni’s Helen Gardner ran well to win by 3 minutes from Ruth Holmes (SARUM) with Rosemary Hodkinson (NOC) a further 3 minutes behind.
In the men’s races Joe Mercer showed that his training at Oxford Uni is going well by taking the M20 race by 4 and a half minutes. James ‘Badger’ Bennett had a great race to finish in 2nd place, with Ed Kelleher in 3rd. Rhodri Buffett ran away with the M18 course showing that he is going to be a danger to the top M20’s as his time was just 3 seconds a kilometre slower than the leading M20. Scotland’s Douglas Tullie took 2nd place, with John Rocke (LEI) in 3rd.
