MTBO Middle & Relay
Alain Berger - Multiple WOC Medalist on Foot & MTB
Fridays Middle race saw strong results throughout the GB team in a tightly packed leaderboard. Best placing in the men's race went to Steve Heading in 27th, with a time of 60:38 - less than 9 minutes down on the Australian winner Adrian Jackson. Killian Lomas finished in 43rd, Andy Simpson in 54th, Gary Tompsett in 60th with Eoin Rothery Irelands top finisher in 64th. In the women's race, Charlotte Somers-Cocks finished in 31st, 12 minutes down on the Austrian winner.
Alain Berger, Bronze Medalist in the Classic Distance at WOC'99 in Scotland, has produced some fantastic performances since his switch to MTB-O and Adventure Racing. In the Middle he took 2nd place to add to his 1st place from the Classic - an improvement from 2002 where he took 2nd in the Sprint & 3rd in the Classic. In today's relay however he mispunched on the final leg whilst battling for a podium position.
Today's relays also saw disapointment for the GB teams, they too succumbed to mispunches while the Irish team finished in 23rd place. Finland won both the Men's & the Women's relays with ease. Hosts Australia were pushed into 3rd in both Men's and Women's Relays. The Czech Republic took silver by only 1 second in the Men's while Austria took silver in the Women's, only 25 seconds ahead of the Aussies.
