wcup :: three in top 10 for gb
The World Cup Finals began in earnest yesterday with two races in one day for the middle distance competitors. After a short - 20 minute - qualifier runners had just a few short hours to prepare for the final.
Top Brit was Heather Monro who qualified well, winning her heat, and came 7th in the final. Sarah Rollins ran extremely well to claim 8th place while Matt Crane made a real international breakthrough to take 9th place in the midst of fierce competition.
The big surprise in the mens was that Thierry Geourgiuo didn't win! The king of middle distance was beaten by Michal Mamleev of Russia who has lived and trained in Italy for the last few years since marrying the Italian orienteer Sabrina Rottsteiner. Tero was pushed into 3rd by Mats Haldin of Finland.
In the womens as well the World Champion had to settle for a lower medal, as Simone was pushed into silver by her teammate Vroni Konig-Salmi.
The races continue today with the heats in the Sprint Distance.
