The women’s competition in this year’s UK Cup has proved one of the most exciting in recent years, with the standard of orienteering getting better and better. Anyone from a number of our top athletes could have taken the title, and with Jo Stevenson and Heather Monro being the only two of the top athletes not competing in 6 races this year, combined with nearly every race being packed with GB Squad runners, made this one of the most exciting in the UK Cup.
In the end it was SYO’s Helen Winskill who took the title, with a string of an impressive 6 wins under her belt as well, including British Night Champion, and British Elite Short and Classic Champion. Hannah Wooton took 2nd place, which included a win at the JK Short race and 2nd place at the British Elites Short. Jenny Whitehead ended up in 3rd, just 3 points behind Wooton, though her results proved consistent with 4 top 3 performances. Sarah Rollins was unable to retain her UK Cup title this year, though she still remains a good bet for high places at the World Champs this year with some impressive results at international races and on the Park World Tour scene, as well as a win at the classic race of Triple O-Severn. Kim Buckley, winner of this year’s British Sprint Championships took 5th place, just 4 points behind Rollins. Top junior this year was Mhairi Mackenzie (NYT) who finished in a fantastic 7th place, including a couple of 2nd places which bodes well for the Junior World Champs and World Student Champs, especially as she still has another year as a junior. Other course winners this year include Claire Ward (JOK Sprint) and Rachael Elder (not-the-British Champs).
