It really was this cold...

EPOC Regional Event – Ogden Water

A bitterly cold day is the one thing which will stick in the mind. Sub-zero temperatures made even the hardened orienteer set off with windstopper or cagoule onto the top of the moors. The area is split into two, with vague peaty moorland which was very hardgoing covering ¾’s of the area, whilst a pretty runnable forest was found at the lower slopes surrounding the reservoir. Most courses endured some tough legs across the moorland which only the strongest of runners managed to get over at any speed.

There were a couple of minor problems on the day with the computers, one apparently caused by frost appearing on one of the keyboards, and the other by the system not being told which courses the colour coded courses were running, although EPOC were still able to get the results on the internet by Monday morning.

Matt Crane produced an impressive performance on M21L, but only just beat Neil Conway by a couple of minutes. Claire Ward won the W21L by 6 minutes, showing some good early season form. Other classes with significant victories include M35L, where James Logue won by nearly 12 minutes; Chris Dicken beating Peter Haines on M50L to win by over 5 mins; and Richard Payn’es 7 minute victory on M55L.

On the junior classes, AIRE juniors were rampant on the longer courses, with Hector Haines winning a tough JM5L by 8 minutes, and Vicky and George Stevens both winning their respective classes of JW5L and JM5M.
