SYO’s event at Bradfield Moor attracted a decent class on both long courses.
Neil Northrop (SHUOC) showed his super-long runs over the winter are paying off by winning the M21L course by a minute and a half from Neil Conway. Hector Haines (AIRE) produced a storming run to finish in 6th place just a few minutes down and beating some quality runners in the meanwhile showing he’ll be a force to reckon with in M16 this year. On W21L Rachel Elder won by 2 minutes proving that two days racing in a row doesn’t affect you having run in the BUSA XC champs the day before, with Becky Carlyle in 2nd place also showing that living in the South doesn’t mean you can’t run well on the moors.
On the junior courses, Jo West (SOS) just beat MDOC’s Lizzie Britton on JW5L. On JM5L Jack Wood (AIRE) beat a number of runners who are in older age categories showing that AIRE’s junior men are a force to be reckoned with this year. Other notable wins came for Jenny Thornton (CLOK) on JW5S, beating Catherine Beresford (MDOC) by 5 minutes; Harriet Andrews of EBOR won JW4 by 6 minutes; Michael beasant (DEE) won JM4 by 5 minutes; and Zachary Field of EBOR won by almost 9 minutes on JM3.
In the veteran classes Martin Ward (SPOOK) used his home advantage well to win M35L by 5 minutes, while Kirsty Bryan-Jones beat the Sheffield pair of Lucy Wiegand and Jenny Hodgson to win W35L. Only 2 seconds separated Dean Field (EBOR) and Jon Emberton (EPOC) on M40L, with Field taking the win on the sprint finish as the splits show he was 8 seconds down at the final control! Other impressive performances came from Hilary Bloor (SYO) on W40L winning by nearly 12 minutes, Christine Andrews of EBOR won W45L by nearly 5 minutes, Richard Payne (EPOC) on a rather short M55L won by nearly 7 minutes, and Pauline Ward of DVO won W60L by nearly 6 minutes.
