This weekend saw the YHOA Championships take place at Brimham Rocks. Entries on junior and senior courses were down due to the UK Cup and FCC races in the South, but with the sun shining down entry on the day was overwhelmed, so much so that a number of people had to copy courses from master maps as all the pre-entered ones had been taken. This was a bit of a mishap on the organisational front as there were people who had pre-entered who were denied having a pre-marked map because some people who entered on the day had taken the spare ones which clubs always produce.

As for the orienteering, Brimham consists of some fantastic rock formations which require very delicate map reading to navigate through untroubled. The best routes seemed to be to stick to the main tracks and dip in and out for the controls, although straight was quicker if you were certain of hitting the control. The rest of the area was energy-sapping heather, but the courses were planned to make it a tricky route choice to either take the very extended routes round on the small paths or just plough straight through the heather. For those who are gifted with a few extra inches in their legs, straight was definitely best, for those who are vertically challenged it really depended upon how fast you would be going the long way round.

A slight mistake with some descriptions on one of the junior courses meant that the prizegiving was slightly delayed, but the rest of the prizes were handed out accordingly by YHOA Chairman Roger Smith.
