event::york city street race
This year’s York City Street Race again took place on the Bank Holiday Monday. Some fine weather meant that the streets were crowded making some of the routes a bit trickier than they would have been otherwise. A number of controls were in parts of the city which had not been visited on any of the 4 previous runnings of this race. The mens’s race had a large field of over 60 runners, with a number of elites turning up for this fantastic event. The early leading time was set by Oli Johnson, who had won the race for the past 3 year’s. However, Niall Bourke (last year’s runner-up) stormed round the course 30 seconds quicker than Johnson. But it was another 2nd place for the Irishman as SHUOC’s Neil Northrop pipped him by just 2 seconds. This was the finale to a good weekend of racing for Neil who had finished 3rd at the Scottish Champs on Saturday, and helped his SHUOC team to 3rd palce on the relay on Sunday. The leading veteran runner was Tim Tett, another runner who had been at the Scottish Champs, who finished nearly 4 minutes behind the leading elites. Leading junior was Stuart Hooton of EBOR, who was also celebrating his 16th birthday!
In the women’s race it was Jenny Whitehead who regained the title having won the race in 2002 and 2003, beating joint runners-up Karen Heppenstall and Liz Day. Leading junior was CLOK’s Jenny Thornton.
