Although not an orienteering event, the Karrimor International Mountain Marathon is a race where many orienteers have achieved great success. This year was no different with class wins for Steve Birkinshaw on the Elite and Rob Little and Chris Sellens on the ‘B’, plus a great 4th place for Andy Middleditch and Oli Johnson on the Elite class.
The event took place in the north-east Lake District, with courses crossing the fells between Ullswater and Haweswater, including the steep sided High Street ridge. Courses on the first day were planned on the long side, as well as comprising huge amounts of climb, and many teams suffered as a result. Conditions were not great either, although one can’t expect to enter the KIMM and compete in fine weather! Even the top teams were overheard saying how tough they had found the courses.
After a very restless night thanks to the high winds, everyone was glad to hear that the wet-weather courses were to be used for the 2nd day. This was partly due to the severity of the previous day’s courses, but also the weather had slightly worsened for the early morning starts with continuous rain staying around the whole morning and high winds on the tops of the fells making it far from easy to make headway.
Despite the conditions, everyone much preferred the courses on the Sunday with times being much shorter than the previous day.
The free meal to all finishers (provided by Wilf’s and Fat Pigs) was greatly appreciated after a pretty gruelling weekend, though one which already has people looking forward to next year’s event to be held somewhere further north than this years' race.
