event :: york city sprint race
The annual York City Sprint race proved to be yet another success. Racing around the busy streets of York on Bank Holiday Monday may sound like a crazy idea, but it is one which works well, and also showcases the sport to the general public exceedingly well thanks to the dedication of EBOR members.
The race proved a very close affair, with GB Squad member Matt Crane winning the A course by just 1 second from SYO’s Mike Sprot, with Neil Northrop a further 7 seconds back. Rob Baker was also running well, though a 2 minute mistake cost him the race and he ended up in 4th. In the women’s race it was another GB Squad member who took victory. Born and riased in York, Jenny Whitehead used her home advantage to great effect, winning by more than a minute in front of Rachael Elder, who was 3 minutes ahead of SYO’s Clare Leventon.
The Junior men’s course was won by Start Squad member Peter Hodkinson, who completed the 2.7km course in a very speedy 12.30! 2nd place went to CLARO’s Duncan Birtwistle, with Robert Kelly of AIRE in 3rd. Alana Wright of CLOK won the Junior women’s course by over 2 minutes from her sister Eloise, with Rachel Malley in 3rd.
