The Attermire National event, part of a Dales Trophy double header, saw stand out performances from up and coming juniors such as Victoria Stevens (AIRE) who won W21L by 7 minutes from former international Kim Buckley (SYO) and Julia Blomquist (W16, BAOC) who took the W18L field apart with a 5 minute victory. This was in contrast to some tight packing at the top of W16A with Sophie Kirk holding off three W14s, Katrin Harding, Jenny Evans and Charlotte Watson.
At the other end of the age spectrum there were large winning margins for Rae Lomas (MDOC) and Celia Wells (EBOR) in W65L and W70L respectively.
Sheffield student Marcus Pinker was in a class of his own on M21L, nearly 10 minutes faster than BOK veteran Mark Saunders. In M35L Martin Ward of SPOOK prevailed in a tight race with NWOC’s James Logue.
Further south JWOC-debutant Iain Embrey scored a big win over Nottinghamshire’s Richard Robinson at a SPLOT Regional Event at West Sherbrook, part of Cannock Chase.
British orienteers were also in action at the Mourne Mountain Marathon where AIRE’s Ian Nixon together with Stephen Bottomley took out the elite class and the B class saw Rachel Majumdar and Laura Daniel take top female pair. Daniel, who made her World Cup debut earlier this year in Hovden, Norway said “I was suffering big style with blisters so we ended up hobbling the last part of day 1 but were well up for it yesterday and had to race hard as the second females were chasing us all the way!”
