EOC : : Sprint Final
This morning was the qualifiers, and this afternoon it was the finals.
The men were off first with some very fast times right from the beginning. 14 minutes was looking like the time to get until Emil Wingstedt took nearly a 30 second lead in 13:35, but there was still half of the field yet to finish with the likes of Yuri Olmeltchenko, Grant Bluett and Damien Renard. The young Finn Mårten Boström finished with a fast 13:51, but still some seconds down on Wingstedt. There were lots more fast times from Pilblad, Renard and Bjørnsgaard, but nothing to challenge the Swede. Olmeltchenko didn’t have one of his better races, and it was the young Russian athlete Andrej Khramov who looked like he was going to challenge Wingstedt, posting exactly the same time at the radio control. However a few seconds time loss here and there saw him drop 11 seconds, but he kept second place.
In the Women’s race Emma Dahlstedt set a fantastic early time, 12:52, which remained unchallenged until fellow Swede Emma Engstrand narrowly pipped her by just 3 seconds. A few minutes later and Sweden occupied 5 of the top 6 spots, with Anne Margrethe Hausken (PWT 2003 champion) from Norway taking the 4th spot. It looked as though Sweden were going to go home with all the medals, however Simone Niggli-Luder was still to finish, and she has lots of medals. Simone came to the radio control 18 seconds better than club mate Jenny Johansson, by the finish she had extended this lead to 19 seconds. Sweden finished only 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 10th. Leading British athlete was Heather Monro who finished 11th, missing a top 10 place by 3 seconds.
In the B races a number of British athletes went out to prove themselves, and we won both men's and women's races with Nick Barrable and Jo Stevenson topping the B finals. Allan Bogle, brought in at late notice to replace World Champion Jamie Stevenson™, finished just 13 seconds behind Nick in 6th place.
